Training Day on Measuring Monumental Olive Trees in Ulldecona ( 9/1/2026 )
Yesterday, January 8, 2026, a Training Day on the Measurement of Monumental Olive Trees was held in Ulldecona, aimed at the Rural Agents of the Generalitat of Catalonia. This was carried out in accordance with Law 6/2020 on the protection, conservation, and enhancement of monumental olive trees, promoted by the Mancomunidad Taula del Sénia, the Territorio del Sénia Association, and the Department of Territory of the Catalan Government.
Under the direction of the Mancomunidad, the Association, and the Department, a large group of Rural Agents from various regions of Catalonia participated.
The day began at the Ulldecona Town Hall with the theoretical part, first discussing key articles of Law 6/2020 and then explaining the technical criteria for measuring monumental olive trees.
Participants then moved to the Foia de Ulldecona area (home to more than 1,400 monumental olive trees, the largest concentration in the world), where the practical part took place, observing the different types of olive trees and the great diversity among them.
Following last year’s presentation by Councillor Silvia Paneque of the Catalonia Monumental Olive Tree Census, which includes 4,160 trees (3,509 of which are in the Montsià region), progress is being made on other aspects for the implementation of the Law.
This Catalan law has served as an example for the law being drafted in the Serra de Tramuntana (Mallorca) by the Consell Insular, as well as for the one recently initiated in the Aragonese Parliament.
