Silvia Paneque presents the census of monumental olive trees across Catalonia at Ulldecona: 4,160 in total. La Taula del Sénia has compiled the one for the Montsià region: 3,509 trees. ( 27/6/2025 )
There are 4,160 monumental olive trees registered in the Catalonian census, of which the vast majority, 3,509 (85%) are located in the Montsià region and, in particular, in the municipality of Ulldecona, with 1,902 specimens. Following the 6/2020 Act, the aim is to protect this natural, agricultural, cultural and landscape heritage and the result of the census will be the basis for the future catalogue and will serve to advance the approval of the Decree that should enable aid to be granted to producers and owners to guarantee this protection. '‘Within 6 to 8 months we will have it approved,’' announced Jordi Terrades, Secretary General of the Department of Territory.
Ulldecona has a particularly high concentration: 1,902, followed by 614 in La Sénia and 224 in Santa Bárbara. Of those in Ulldecona, 1,400 are located in the area known as La Foia. ‘This is the most important concentration of olive trees in the world’, said Jaume Antich, president of the Territori Sénia Association.
The manager of the Mancomunitat de la Taula del Sénia, Teresa Adell, emphasized the promotion of the union of producers under the certified brand “Aceite farga milenaria”. Sixteen producers and vendors have already joined in this effort to revalue the meagre production of an area that was not known for the quality of its oil. ‘The thousand-year-old olive trees and their oil have put this area on the map’.
During the presentation ceremony, the councillor for Territorial Planning, Silvia Paneque, stressed the importance of the heritage of monumental olive trees and the historical and cultural values they represent. ‘They convert a heritage that is alive today but that connects us with the past and from the present, it leads us towards the future, as well as reinforcing the identity of the territory and as a whole as Catalans’.
